Medical management is utilized in patients with either symptomatic or asymptomatic vertebral artery stenosis . One of the various causes of stenosis of the vertebral artery is atherosclerosis; therefore,medical treatment of its risk factors (hypertension,hyperlipidemia,and diabetes mellitus) is mainly seen . Antihypertensive treatment is recommended to treat hypertension by lowering blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg . Statins with or without LDL-lowering therapy and bile acid sequestrants or niacin are used to treat hyperlipidemia by lowering LDL cholesterol below 100 mg/dL . Physical activity,glucose-lowering medications,dieting,and a statin-type lipid-lowering medication are used to treat diabetes mellitus by lowering glucose levels and reducing LDL levels to around or below 70 mg/dL . It is recommended that patients diagnosed with vertebral artery stenosis due to atherosclerosis or mechanical compression of the vertebral artery be placed on antiplatelet medications such as aspirin,aspirin with modified-release dipyridamole,clopidogrel,or ticlopidine to prevent strokes,myocardial infarctions,and transient ischemic attacks . In the Warfarin-Aspirin Symptomatic Intracranial Disease (WASID),it was concluded that warfarin might be more effective in preventing strokes for patients with symptomatic vertebral artery stenosis .","department":"
