Treatment of dry eye diseaseThe treatment of DED is often chronic and multifaceted to mitigate all etiologic components, and potentially involves both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions . Treatment commonly progresses in a stepwise fashion, beginning with appropriate conservative therapies and advancing to more intensive treatments as indicated based on the severity of disease . Overall goals of DED therapy are to restore and maintain ocular surface homeostasis,to minimize clinical signs and long-term ocular surface damage, and to ultimately maximize visual function and patient quality of life .
Pharmacological therapeutics
Many pharmacological agents are used in the treatment of DED,including topical and systemic medications. Commonly used topicals include lubricants, corticosteroids, lifitegrast, and cyclosporine A . Systemic agents administered orally may include antibiotics (azithromycin and tetracyclines),poly-unsaturated omega-3 fatty acid supplements, and antioxidant supplements . Additionally, varenicline nasal spray (Tyrvaya™,Oyster Point Pharma,Princeton,NJ) is a newly approved cholinergic agonist nasal spray indicated for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of DED .
